Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat blood vessel malformations and also malformations of the lymphatic system.
Sclerotherapy uses a local anesthetic to numb the area, then a long needle is inserted through the skin and into the blood vessel or lymphatic tissue. The goal is to make all or part of the abnormal tissue “dry up” and die.
The needle is then removed, and repeat treatments are needed at two-week intervals until permanent results are achieved.
To prepare for your Sclerotherapy session, you will need to:
1. Do not take any antibiotics within 48 hours of your appointment!
2. Avoid sunlight for at least 24 hours before your appointment, if possible. Sunlight can cause discoloration of the treated area, so if you’re going to be out in the sun during this time, it’s best to stay inside.
